Total Inclusion of all Handicapped Children 



OBJECTIVES.

            The general objective of CWT is to develop and implement a structured program for children from birth up to the age of 16 suffering from cerebral palsy, hearing impairment and mental handicaps.  This will enable these children to be included in the mainstream education.  This will enable us to diagnose the condition and determine the appropriate treatment and individual program for each child for rehabilitating and mainstreaming.

 

Specific objectives are as follows.

  1. Early Identification through screening activities.

       For the screening of Hearing impaired children we require,

  • Pediatric audiometry.
  • BERA (specialized equipment used for determining hearing abilities of  infants).
  • Behavior observation audiometry.
  • Objective audtiometry.
  • For Mental and Learning Disabilities and Cerebral palsy we require,
  • The ability of school staff to administer development screening procedures and examinations of young children.
  • The capacity to assess the performance of older school aged children.

 

  1. Developnmet of communication skills and structured theraputic programs.

For the Hearing Impaired.

  • Auditory training.
  • Facial orientation.
  • Sensitization to tactile stimulation.
  • Counseling for the children and parents.

For mental disabilities and Cerebral Palsy,

  • Identification of lacunas in development.
  • Development of occupational therapy.
  • Development physical therapy.
  • Counseling for children and parents. 
  1. Teacher and parent training programs.

For all categories,

  • Parent’s awareness and understanding of the disability.
  • Methodology of active participation of the family in inclusion of the disabled  child in the activities of daily living.
  • Development of training modules.
  • Understanding the limitations of the child and involvement of the child in home and social activities.
  • Awareness about the role of other family members. 
  1. Planning and implementing individual education programs.

For the Hearing impaired,

  • Assessment of individual children’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Planning of individual educational programs based on the level of hearing impairment (short term and long term training).
  • Training activities.
  • Periodic assessment and re-planning.

For mental disabilities and Cerebral Palsy,

  • Level of neuro-sensory neuro-motor development.
  • O.T. and Physiotherapy. 
  1. Supply of appropriate aids.

For the hearing impaired,

  • Scientific fitting of hearing aids.
  • For Cerebral Palsy,
  • Calipers and splints.
  • Neuro-sensory level kits.
  • Shoes.
  • Wheelchairs.
  • Walkers.
  • Sitting aids.
  • Toilet training aids.
  • Feeding appliances.

 

  1. Community awareness and development of partnerships with normal schools for mainstreaming handicapped children.
  • To conduct exchange programs with regular school children and teachers, visits from and to regular schools, extra curricular activities with regular schools.
  • Family member awareness.
  • Awareness of regular school children.
  • Awareness of teacher in regular schools.
  • Awareness of the community at large.

 

  1. Research activities.

To conduct research in the following areas,

  • Early identification and diagnosis.
  • Educational methodology.
  • Development of Education material for local needs.
  • Epidemiology.
  • Equipment.
  • Genetics.
  • Speech therapy.
  • Motor Skill therapy.
  • Research in the neurophysiology of deglutition
  • And its relation to speech development.

 

  1. Communication and methods of supervisory care.
  2. Awareness of normal children to the issues of handicapped children.
  3. Construction of new school facilities.
